One visit to Mount Olivet Conference & Retreat Center (MOCRC) is all it takes to become captivated by the serene beauty that surrounds guests while on site. With opportunities to expand understanding, enjoyment, and appreciation of God’s creation, the MOCRC and its trail system provide the perfect backdrop for individual and group growth. One unique feature of the MOCRC trail system is the marsh walk – a floating walkway that provides access to a small island off the shore of Chub Lake. The island is an ideal place for reflection, with benches placed at two beautiful look-out points.
Construction of the marsh walk started in 1986. It was completed over two summers and was dedicated on August 30, 1987, in memory of Gary Holstad, Troop 110 Scoutmaster at Mount Olivet Lutheran Church for 23 years, instrumental in developing the MOCRC trail system and had left behind his own vision and notes about one day creating a marsh nature walk. In the spring of 2012, a heavy rainstorm caused the marsh walk to break apart in three places. Although repaired in those places after the storm, it is evident that 30 years of weather and use have taken their toll. To ensure safe access to the marsh and the island, it is time to rebuild the marsh walk, which we plan to do in the fall of 2018, pending approval of the DNR.
The cost to rebuild the marsh walk and remove the old one is $127,500. Generous gifts from our supporters and budgeted funds toward this project total $35,000 thus far, leaving $92,500 for us to raise. We can realize significant savings with the assistance of volunteers to help with the demolition of the existing marsh walk. Your support is needed and appreciated.
