SUMMARY:Day Lenten Journey
DESCRIPTION:Spend a day at the Conference & Retreat Center or livestream from anywhere for our annual Day Lenten Journey. This retreat provides space to gather with familiar and new friends and enter the season of Lent together through worship\, learning\, conversation\, and connection with creation. \nBelonging: The Gospel of John as a Call to Discipleship \nUnique to the Gospel of John are the “I Am” statements of Jesus. From “I am the bread of life” to “I am the vine\,” each statement invites believers into a deeper relationship with Jesus. Jesus makes his first “I am” statement when talking with the Samaritan woman at the well (John 4:1-42). This provocative encounter shows us the potential and possibilities of our call to discipleship and sets the stage for understanding the other “I Am” statements in John’s Gospel. Join the Reverend Dr. Karoline Lewis\, and Retreat Center staff\, for an in-depth study of the implications of this text for our Lenten Journey this year. Worship will be led by Pastor Bill MacLean.   \n\n \nKaroline M. Lewis\, Ph.D. is the Marbury E. Anderson Chair in Biblical Preaching at Luther Seminary\, St. Paul\, MN\, where she has taught since 2007. She is the author of multiple books\, including A Lay Preacher’s Guide: How to Craft a Faithful Sermon; Embody: Five Steps to Leading With Integrity; and John: Fortress Biblical Preaching Commentaries\, as well as numerous articles and book chapters. One of her newest books\, coming out soon\, is Belonging: Five Keys to Unlocking Your Potential as a Disciple.  \nOrdained in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America\, Lewis is the program director for the Festival of Homiletics\, a contributing writer for Working Preacher\, and co-host of the site’s weekly podcast\, Sermon Brainwave.  She leads conferences\, workshops\, and retreats internationally on the Gospel of John\, the New Testament\, interpreting the Bible\, preaching\, leadership\, and women in ministry.  \nCost for those attending in-person is $20 (includes lunch and program). Cost for those attending virtually is $10 (includes link to livestream program). Bus transportation is available for $10 from West (8:30am)\, 7500 York (8:30am) and Mpls Campus (9am). To register for the bus\, choose your bus stop location (West\, 7500 York or Mpls Campus) in the Additional Items section of this registration.

SUMMARY:Tending to Trauma: Yours\, Mine\, and Ours
DESCRIPTION:“The opposite of trauma is connection\,” says therapist and sociologist Terry Real. Traumatizing experiences leave us feeling isolated and lonely. In this retreat\, therapist and professor Carla Dahl will lead us in exploring how to relate to our personal trauma histories\, how to recognize and tend to the evidence of traumatic experiences in others\, and how to deepen our awareness of collective trauma (including intergenerational trauma and community experiences of disaster). We will discuss physiological and spiritual aspects of trauma\, the importance of self-compassion\, and practices and rituals that help re-establish connection with ourselves and others. Whether you are personally experiencing trauma or caring for others with traumatic experiences\, (or both)\, this retreat will increase your capacity to live with hope and healing in the midst of it all. \n \nCarla Dahl is Professor Emerita of Congregational and Community Care at Luther Seminary in St. Paul\, Minnesota. She has trained therapists and clergy since 1993 and also has a private counseling and consulting practice\, working with individuals\, couples\, and groups around issues of grief\, spirituality\, relationships\, and life transitions. She’s written in the areas of ambiguous loss\, families and spirituality\, and the training of helping professionals; her current research focus is on long-distance grandmothering\, and her research assistant\, 6-year-old Guthrie\, lives in northeastern Wisconsin. \nRough Schedule (detailed schedule available for registrants) \nMonday August 8\nMorning: Check-in\, Coffee/Cinnamon Rolls\, Sessions 1 & 2 with Carla Dahl\nLunch\nAfternoon: Forest Bathing\, Creative Art Session\, Free Time to move\, reflect\, rest\, and Session 3 with Carla Dahl\nHappy Hour & Dinner\nEvening: Snacks & Beverage Bar\, Pool\, Whirlpool\, Sauna\, Conversation around the Fire \nTuesday August 9\nMorning: Breakfast\, Mindfulness Meditation\, Sessions 4 & 5 with Carla Dahl\nLunch\nAfternoon: Free Time & Departure \nA variety of overnight accommodations are available including single or double occupancy in our hotel-style rooms and occupancy in our dorm rooms (limit 6 people to a dorm). SUMMARY:Divine Laughter\, Humor\, and Wellbeing? (Virtual Workshop)
DESCRIPTION:Register now for the second workshop of Living Well\, Leading Well\, a three-part monthly series of virtual workshops promoting wholeness\, wellbeing\, and renewal in our personal and professional lives. \nWhat do humor and comedy have to do with faith\, theology\, and wellbeing? Everything! In the Bible\, God laughs at people\, people laugh at God\, and there are some really funny stories. Think\, for example\, about Sarah and Abraham both laughing God in the face when God promised Sarah would bear a son in her old age. Karl and Rolf Jacobson will present on what church members\, theologians\, and ministers can learn from the serious business of comedy. \nRolf and Karl Jacobson\, brothers from the same mother\, suffer from the genetically inherited traits of being fans of Minnesota sports teams and Lutheran pastors.  Karl is the lead pastor of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Minneapolis; Rolf is the Rogness Professor of Scripture\, Theology\, and Ministry at Luther Seminary in St. Paul.  They’ve written a few funny books about theology together\, including Crazy Talk: A Not-So-Stuffy Dictionary of Theological Terms and Crazy Book: A Not-So-Stuffy Dictionary of Biblical Terms. \nThe zoom meeting link will be sent in the confirmation email you receive after registering.

SUMMARY:Fearfully & Wonderfully Made? (Virtual Workshop)
DESCRIPTION:Register now for the first workshop of Living Well\, Leading Well\, a three-part monthly series of virtual workshops promoting wholeness\, wellbeing\, and renewal in our personal and professional lives. \n \nRev. Dr. Anna Madsen serves as a freelance theologian in Two Harbors\, Minnesota. Through OMG: Center for Theological Conversation (www.omgcenter.com) she writes articles\, books\, and blogs; consults congregations and individuals; and presents on matters related to the intersection of theology\, faith\, and life. She also hosts The Spent Dandelion Theological Retreat Center (www.spentdandelion.com)\, where rostered leaders and laity can stay in the studio apartment overlooking the forest to retreat\, reflect\, and renew by way of conversation with Anna\, making use of her library\, or simply taking in all the beauty that is Minnesota’s North Shore. In 2004\, an accident killed her husband and gave her son\, Karl\, a traumatic brain injury. That unwelcome event entered Anna\, Karl\, and her daughter Else into many new worlds\, not least of all the new world of life with a loved one with disabilities. \nBased on Anna’s personal experience of grief and her son’s traumatic brain injury\, this workshop will wrestle with questions surrounding disability\, suffering\, and God’s intentions\, interventions\, and the possibility of redemption of and hope despite pain and loss. Psalm 139’s claim of being “fearfully and wonderfully made” might initially sound comforting\, but in light both of disability and suffering\, it raises questions about whether we are fearfully and wonderfully made…for this? Join Anna in this first workshop to hear her theological and personal responses to these questions and more. Cost is $20. \nThe zoom meeting link will be sent in the confirmation email you receive after registering.

SUMMARY:Day Lenten Journey
DESCRIPTION:The Holy In-Between \nBegin Lent this year by reflecting on its often-neglected last day\, Holy Saturday. When the disciples feel bewilderment and despair. It is a painful\, in-between day that\, upon reflection\, teaches us to wait upon God in between all forms of life and death. Join Pastors Freeman and Ruud\, Retreat Center Director Rev. Theresa Latini\, and Program Director Rev. Jeremy Bork for a day of exploring the history\, art\, liturgy\, and meaning of this day as it shapes our journey through Lent this year. \nCost is $20 for lunch and program. Register in Realm at least 24 hours in advance.  \nBus transportation is available for $10 from West (8:45am)\, 7500 York (8:45am) and Mpls Campus (9:15am). To register for the bus\, choose your bus stop location (West\, 7500 York or Mpls Campus) in the Additional Items section of this registration. Please note that a minimum of 10 people is required for each bus.
